Luciano è il figlio del medico locale di un borgo della Tuscia tardo ottocentesca: un'anima persa, un ubriacone che si trascina attraverso il villaggio e le campagne con grande scandalo per la comunità. Ma Luciano guarda in alto, e ama una contadina promessa ad un principe: lo stesso che taglieggia la comunità, e contro cui Luciano intende ribellarsi in nome di una giustizia di principio. Le cose non andranno come crede, e l'uomo si troverà a vagare dall'altra parte del mondo in cerca di un tesoro leggendario inseguito da molti, convinti che l'oro nascosto cambierà la loro vita. Quella vita in cui le cose importanti invece, a ben guardare, sono altre.
