Il film è ambientato in Gran Bretagna. Nella scena d'apertura, Rosie Jones, una giovane donna incinta (Emilia Fox) sta viaggiando in treno, quando da un grande baule che costituisce il suo bagaglio inizia a fuoriuscire del sangue. Interrogata dalla polizia, confessa con calma che il baule contiene il corpo del marito infedele e della sua amante uccisi e fatti a pezzi. Viene pertanto giudicata incapace di intendere e di volere e poi condannata dal giudice (Roger Hammond) a trascorrere il resto dell'esistenza in un manicomio criminale.
