Sienna Miller e Golshifteh Farahami interpretano due donne della periferia di Chicago dalle personalità molto diverse, le cui storie saranno però destinate ad incrociarsi. La prima è Marylin, centralinista insoddisfatta e sposata con Harvey, un parassita nullafacente e criminale. La seconda invece è Mona, una donna musulmana che ha sposato l'uomo che ama (ma dal quale non riesce ad avere figli) e che lavora nell'alimentari di famiglia, costantemente oppressa dalla suocera. Quando Marylin scopre che il marito la tradisce, si licenzia dall'oggi al domani e molla tutto per realizzare il suo sogno: partecipare a un popolare concorso di danza del ventre che si tiene a Santa Fe. Presto la sua strada incontrerà quella di Mona, anch'essa fortemente decisa a fuggire dalla sua famiglia. Le due giovani donne percorrono l'America senza voltarsi, con leggerezza, al ritmo delle prove di ballo e degli spettacoli di danza, fino al giorno in cui Marylin scopre che Mona è ricercata dalla polizia...

The widow's broker has a wealthy friend, who becomes very interested in the girl, although he is twice her age. He proposes marriage, believing that he can win her love through kindness. The girl, for her mother' sake accepts and they are married. Despite his great love he is unable to overcome the great difference in their ages, so he buys the worthless oil stock so that she may be independent, and he then leaves her to go back to his oil fields. His sacrifice arouses the girl's love and she follows him to tell him of her awakening.
