A film by Baldvin Z & Ólafur Arnalds Island Songs is a unique audio-visual portrait of my home country, Iceland. In 2016 I travelled to 7 towns across Iceland and collaborated with 7 local artists to create, record and perform a new composition. For 7 weeks we released a brand new song and live video every Monday. Alongside the performances we made this film, Island Songs, where we explore what makes these artists tick, the influence the country has had on their lives and try to show a different side of this island we all call home.
Island Sons / 1987
A successful businessman in Hawaii disappears amid allegations of illegal activities. Years later his four sons bear the burden and repercussions of these allegations, as well, taking care of his legacy. The revenge Maurice wreaks upon the criminals may not save his heart, but perhaps, will save his soul.
Island Song / 1976
Strapping a video camera to himself as he drives a motorcycle around an island, Palestine harmonizes with the engine, maniacally repeating the phrase, "Gotta get outta here...gotta get outta here..." His chanting voice merges with the vibrations of the motor, forming an incessant soundtrack that echoes the jarring motion of the camera. Palestine creates a kind of composite instrument in motion as well as an "articulated personal drama". His stated desire for escape is contained by the boundaries of the island. Palestine was a trained cantor, and he often used his moving body and sustained vocalizing to generate a physical and aural intensity in his musical/video performances of this period.

In January 1956, a new pop phenomenon appeared in the UK charts: a British artist playing a guitar. His name was Lonnie Donegan and the song he sang was Rock Island Line. Donegan’s rough-and-ready style was at odds with the polished crooners who dominated the charts. He played the guitar in a way that sounded like anyone could do it. Rock Island Line sounded like nothing else on the radio and it inspired a generation of British youths to pick up guitars and begin a journey that would take them to the top of the American charts.

Un gruppo di scienziati giapponesi, guidati da Kusumi, si trova da tempo su di un isolotto del Pacifico per effettuare, per conto dell'Onu, un esperimento di ibernazione e verificare pertanto se è possibile per l'uomo mutare le condizioni climatiche nel mondo e rendere così fertili le regioni deserte. Ai ricercatori si aggrega un giornalista, Goro, il quale, benché malvisto all'inizio, riesce poi ad inserirsi nel gruppo. Questi un giorno, durante una passeggiata sulla riva del mare, vede una ragazza, che scompare improvvisamente alla sua vista, e non avendo altre prove la notizia non è creduta dai compagni. Intanto si dà il via all'esperimento, che fallisce per alcune interferenze che impediscono il contatto decisivo. Questi impedimenti sono causati dalle grida di richiamo del figlio di Godzilla, un mostro preistorico racchiuso nel suo uovo che alcune mantidi giganti cercano di rompere.
