Vienna, 1920. L'impero austro-ungarico è crollato. Peter Perg torna a casa dalla Grande Guerra, dopo anni di prigionia. Ma la Vienna in cui torna a casa non assomiglia per niente al luogo che conosceva una volta. La nuova Repubblica austriaca prospera sulla libertà sociale e artistica, ma i movimenti antidemocratici e la disoccupazione incombono in alto. Straniero nella sua città natale, la sua vita prende una brutta piega quando uno dei suoi ex compagni viene assassinato. Improvvisamente le misteriose uccisioni di veterani stanno aumentando. Collegato personalmente alle vittime, Perg decide di consegnare l'assassino alla giustizia. Trova un alleato nella fredda dottoressa forense Theresa Körner, con la quale ha una storia più profonda e condivisa.
