Nel XIX secolo a Londra, il piccolo David è maltrattato dal secondo marito della madre. Quando la donna muore, l'uomo costringe il bambino a lasciare la scuola e lavorare in una fabbrica di vini. Qui David conosce un barbone che diviene il suo migliore amico. La fabbrica fallisce e David viene derubato di tutto ciò che possiede per cui, stanco, lacero e affamato, percorre da solo a piedi alcuni chilometri, tra le mille insidie della Londra vittoriana, fino alla casa di una zia paterna. La donna, impietosita lo accoglie e si affeziona all'orfano e inizia a crescerlo ed istruirlo a sua spese, fronteggiando il patrigno che lo rivorrebbe indietro.

David Copperfield non è certo il bambino più fortunato dell'Inghilterra vittoriana. Nasce già orfano di padre e se i primi anni di vita trascorrono felici, con il successivo matrimonio della madre, il patrigno e la sorella di questi gli rendono l'infanzia impossibile: portandogli via il patrimonio, chiudendolo in un collegio e, soprattutto, facendo ammalare l'amata (ma molliccia) madre, che morirà successivamente. Come se non bastasse, le situazioni, man mano che la sua esistenza procederà fino agli anni della maturità adulta, si aggraveranno, non tanto per il destino che si abbatte su di lui, ma perché David rimane inerme di fronte a ogni ostacolo che gli viene minacciosamente contro, scegliendo il mutismo e l'omertà, alla ribellione e al rispetto di se stessi.
