The greengrocer Ferdinand Strubel wants his daughter Marianne to marry the son of the brewery owner Baron von Schnackenberg. Since Strubel is an impossibly cheap bastard, the marriage is to take place on 20 May, which, coincidentally, is the same day the city is having a grand festival for him to celebrate his company's being in business for 100 years. Marianne, however, has fallen in love with Leopold, a gym teacher; and when he reads an article in the newspaper about the upcoming arrival of Haley's Comet on 19 May, he comes up with an idea how he can prevent the wedding from taking place: He tells Strubel that the world is going to come to an end when the comet shows up, so that Strubel will see the errors of his way, cancel the arranged wedding and will become a better person for it. (Sucker!).

La NASA entra in stato di allerta quando un'improvvisa pioggia di meteoriti distrugge uno Shuttle in orbita attorno alla Terra, insieme al satellite che gli astronauti stavano riparando, e in seguito cade su un'area che va dalla Finlandia alla costa orientale degli Stati Uniti, distruggendo in particolare New York. Ben presto gli scienziati scoprono che un enorme asteroide si dirige verso la Terra e la colpirà entro 18 giorni con conseguenze catastrofiche. L'unica soluzione è trivellare l'asteroide e poi farlo saltare con una bomba nucleare collocata al suo interno. Per l'incarico vengono reclutati e addestrati l'esperto di trivellazione petrolifera Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) e i suoi uomini, tra cui il giovane A.J. (Ben Affleck). Quest'ultimo non ha buoni rapporti con Harry perché innamorato di sua figlia Grace (Liv Tyler).

Improvvisamente, una possente e misteriosa voce echeggia nel cielo di Napoli: annuncia che alle ore 18 di quello stesso giorno comincerà il Giudizio Universale. E' come un sasso caduto in un formicaio: una folla di personaggi si muove e s'agita sotto l'influsso di quella voce implacabile. C'è chi tenta di salvarsi denunciando i propri peccati, chi si propone di rinunciare alle proprie vendette, chi si dimostra incredulo, chi trova rifugio al terrore nella più pazza spensieratezza. Ma dopo l'inizio del grande processo, a cui tutti possono assistere attraverso la televisione, il giudizio è bruscamente interrotto e sulla città comincia a cadere una pioggia torrenziale. E' un nuovo diluvio, che sostituisce più drasticamente e definitivamente il giudizio? Tutti lo temono. Ma non si tratta che d'un violento temporale che presto s'esaurisce. Finita la paura, ciascuno torna alle antiche abitudini, dimentico del propositi fatti poche ore prima sotto l'assillo della paura.
