Darpan / 1969
A Teacher from Siddharth College, Balraj Dutt (Sunil Dutt) from a well-known, wealthy, and reputed family falls in love with a former prostitute, Madhvi (Waheeda Rehman) and despite of opposition from his family, marries her, complications arise. The elder brother (Rehman), now married, recognizes Madhvi, as he had spent romantic nights with her. Then arrives Vinod (Ramesh Deo), a family friend, from the United States of America, with full approval for the marriage until he actually meets and then he too recognizes Madhvi, as he had spent some romantic nights with her. How will Madhvi continue to live her married life with the mirror reflecting her past?

In his debut feature film, Kumar Shahani employs highly innovative forms for depicting the conflict between oppressive feudal norms and a changing industrial landscape while making female sexuality and its complex mindscape the focus. The protagonist, Taran, the younger daughter of a Rajasthani zamindar revolts against the social code set by the class system by a sexual encounter with an engineer. This film was one of the earlier and successful examples experimentation in colour during the advent of New Indian cinema.
Behind the Mirror / 2005
The Little Painter of Rajasthan Aniket is a middle class executive living in the Indian city of Pune with his wife Malati and his son. He leaves Pune every morning at dawn and undertakes a long train journey to work in Mumbai. After riots took place, he takes his son Anirudh to his grand-mother's place in a little town of Shekhawati, in the middle of the desert, and somehow haunted by the magical and superb traditional paintings decorating the walls of houses and palaces. The old woman happily welcomes her grand-son she hardly knows. Anirudh discovers another world, a fascinating world far from what he was used to. He feels very affectionate for his grandmother. She gives him the painting box of her deceased husband, the artist who made the most beautiful paintings in town.

In a quest to explore the impact of India's Partition on the classical music traditions of South Asia, Delhi-based filmmaker Yousuf Saeed spent about 6 months in Pakistan in 2005. After traveling in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad - interviewing musicians and scholars, attending music concerts, and observing the teaching of music in various institutions, Yousuf not only documented some of the surviving practitioners and patrons of classical music, but also raised many vital questions, about cultural identity, nationalism, legitimacy of music in Islam, Pakistan's popular culture and its affairs with India, and the survival of classical music itself in South Asia. This quest has resulted in a musical documentary film, Khayal Darpan, featuring some well-known as well as many lesser known but talented musicians of Pakistan.
