Una notte di Capodanno. In punto di morte, una militante dell'Esercito della Salvezza chiede di rivedere il suo protetto David, che si sta ubriacando in un cimitero, evocando l'antica credenza del carretto fantasma e del suo cocchiere, che conduce i morti nell'aldilà: il carro passa di mano ogni notte di San Silvestro, e a guidarlo è sempre l'ultima anima che, allo scoccare della mezzanotte, sia morta in peccato. David, colpito da una bottiglia, crolla a terra. Passa il carro, e il fantasma cocchiere si ferma a esaminare il passato di David, che ripercorriamo insieme a lui. Di fronte a quei tristi ricordi, l'uomo piange, e la sua protettrice supplica il cocchiere di lasciarlo andare. Inflessibile, il fantasma con la falce lo fa risalire sul carro; ma passando davanti alla casa di David, i due vedono attraverso la finestra che la moglie di lui si sta avvelenando. David prega il cocchiere di risparmiarla: la sincerità del suo cuore fa sì che la preghiera sia esaudita.
