Calvin gestisce un negozio di barbiere nel south side di Chicago. Al suo interno vive quotidianamente un'umanità variegata: Eddie, un vecchio barbiere senza più clienti, Jimmy, anche lui barbiere e studente di college, Isaac (il nuovo arrivato), Ricky, un ex galeotto che sta tentando di rifarsi una vita, e Terri, una donna dal carattere forte che, però, non riesce a lasciare il suo fidanzato. Dal canto suo, Calvin ha ereditato dal padre questo faticoso mestiere ma dopo tanto lavoro, con i conti da pagare ed un figlio in arrivo, comincia a vederlo come un peso ed una perdita di tempo. Dopo aver venduto il negozio ad uno strozzino, tuttavia, il giovane comincia finalmente ad intuire la filosofia di vita del padre, la sua eredità morale, e la rilevanza sociale che il negozio riveste per il quartiere. E così iniziano i rimorsi. Calvin inizia a darsi da fare per rimediare il denaro necessario a cercare di ricomprare il negozio.

Al di là del clima che si respira all'interno del salone, l'intero quartiere in cui sorge vive un momento di difficoltà tanto che Calvin e i suoi collaboratori si prodigheranno per salvare la situazione.

I piccoli commercianti sono stati riposti in secondo piano a favore di grandi centri commerciali, e il South Side di Chicago sta dimenticando le proprie radici. Le storie all'interno del negozio stanno cambiando: Jimmy è diventato il portaborse dell'assessore Brown e lo difende ingenuamente credendo che comunque i cambiamenti sono positivi.

Il negozio è affidato a Zacharia Homer (Monty Ross), socio di Joe, che pensa di gestire un'attività onesta. Ma ogni cliente che entra nel negozio si taglia i capelli, quindi vuole fare una puntata, e al rifiuto di Zacharia se ne va. Dopo molti clienti persi Zacharia si convince che è proprio il lotto ad attirare la clientela. Inoltre Ruth (Donna Bailey), sua moglie, si lamenta per la scarsità di soldi. Dopo aver riflettuto, per non chiudere il negozio, Zacharia accetta di riprendere le giocate clandestine.
