Los Angeles, alla fine degli anni '70. Rudy Donatello lavora come drag queen in un locale a West Hollywood. Una notte, dopo il suo spettacolo, incontra Paul Fleiger, un vice procuratore distrettuale. I due iniziano a frequentarsi e presto diventano una coppia. Quando Marco Deleon, un ragazzo di 14 anni affetto dalla sindrome di Down, viene abbandonato dalla madre tossicodipendente, Marianna, in seguito all'arresto di lei, Rudy e Paul decidono di prenderlo con loro, e divengono per il giovane la famiglia che egli non ha mai avuto. Tuttavia, nel momento in cui le autorità vengono a conoscenza di questa inconsueta situazione familiare, Rudy e Paul si vedono costretti a ingaggiare una battaglia legale per salvare la vita del ragazzo, che hanno imparato ad amare come un figlio.
