A qualche chilometro da New York, nella Contea di Westchester, tre giovani mogli prendono un battello per un'escursione con un gruppo di orfanelli. Sul ponte sono raggiunte dalla lettera di una comune amica che le informa che lascerà la città con uno dei loro mariti. La donna non precisa quale. Imbarcate e impossibilitate a sciogliere l'enigma, ritornano nei pensieri alla loro vita coniugale, trovando nelle pieghe del quotidiano indizi che alimentano il sospetto.
