1848 / 1948

Realizzato per il Comitato milanese per le celebrazioni del centenario del 1848, il cortometraggio è stato realizzato da Risi con la collaborazione di importanti personalità della cultura milanese come Giorgio Strehler e lo scrittore Mario Bonfantini. Il film si apre con la prova generale di un balletto alla Scala alla presenza di pochi militari austriaci. Una Milano deserta è rotta dall’urlo di un bambino: “A fuoco la città”. Iniziano così le “Cinque giornate di Milano”, l’insurrezione avvenuta tra il 18 e il 22 marzo 1848 per liberarsi dalla dominazione austriaca del Regno Lombardo-Veneto. Risi ricostruisce con minimi mezzi e grandissima inventiva drammaturgica la rivolta popolare a cui partecipano tutti: in- tellettuali, donne, seminaristi, bambini, contadini (con una sfolgorante Lucia Bosè alla sua prima apparizione sullo schermo). L’aspra lotta terminerà con l’immagine di un uomo che corre sul Duomo di Milano e che dal punto più alto sventola la bandiera italiana.

Funeral at Bongo: The Death of Old Anai / 1979

In 1972, the Dogon of the Bandiagara cliff in Mali celebrated the funeral of Anaï Dolo, head of the Bongo Masks Society, who died at the age of 122. On this occasion, the large Bongo mask, is erected and for twenty days, family members, elders, men from neighbouring villages purify the village.
