The Long Goodbye / 2017

A middle-aged man who had emigrated many years ago and now is returning to Taiwan to help deal with the funeral affairs of a friend with whom he has not had contact for many years. But he is encountering many difficulties because he is not a relative and can not sign legal documents. This trip is a journey back to his hometown and about nostalgia; it is also an atonement for a late farewell.

Yuichi Kosaka is a salaried businessman in Ueda city. His achievements have not been improved recently, and he is betrayed by the manager of takada. Takada, who is related to the company's executives, is very strict with him. Every night late, Yuichi is often dissatisfied with his wife, Kazue, and his daughter Sanae.On the other day Yuichi ran the car aiming at his home village. However, it is lost in the mountain road which should know well. An old public telephone keeps in sight, and yuichiro stops the car before it. It was Yuichi who had been able to find the name of the old high school classmate, Tai in the old telephone book, and dial, and was surprised to hear the voice of the big. It was because the voice was as it was 30 years ago. The telephone was connected to the past.

Through these fragments of travelogues, the film explores the nature of consciousness in motion and what it means to use archives, images, and cinema as documentations as well as vehicles for travel.

Matt originally is after his target and his family but fate drags him into the infighting of the corrupted governors. He and the orphan of his target face tedious situations and finally continue their journey in the wild wide west.

My youngest granduncle is the photographer in my extended family. On every special occasion, we always see him moving about with a camera. Switching from analogue to digital compact cameras, he documents the happiness and sorrow, life and death of family members. One day he asked me to make a ‘retrospective film’ to be played at his funeral. I took on this assignment and began a journey with him.
