All female theater Takarazuka’s production of the musical which portrays the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria and how she danced with Death , from her engagement and marriage in 1854 to her murder in 1898 at the hands of the Italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni. The empress whose tumultuous life is veiled in mystery is retold through the narrative of Death and his pursuit of love for her.

In the realm of the dead, Luigi Lucheni is on trial for the assassination of Empress Elisabeth. The disembodied voice of the judge rings out, demanding to know why Lucheni killed her. Lucheni responds, in his own defense, that he was doing her a favor as Elisabeth and Death were lovers. He calls upon the ghosts of Elisabeth's family and friends to corroborate this statement. Death appears in their midst, a pale, androgynous, eternally youthful man who admits that he was in love with Elisabeth. (1996, Snow)

Serie tv ispirata a fatti realmente accaduti. Baviera, XIX secolo. La giovane Elisabeth, detta Sissi (1837-1898), si innamora a prima vista di Franz Joseph, Imperatore d'Austria. Contro ogni previsione, dato che la promessa sposa del sovrano è sua sorella, Sissi lo sposa. La giovane entra a corte, in un vortice di tensioni e intrighi.

Vienna, 1877. Il 24 dicembre l'Imperatrice d'Austria Elisabetta, nota ai più come Sissi, compie 40 anni, un'età che per una donna dell'epoca, soprattutto una nota per la sua avvenenza, segnava l'inizio della fine. Elisabetta è infelice, e non fa nulla per nasconderlo: inscena svenimenti strategici durante le parate ufficiali, coltiva progetti suicidi e si intrattiene con uomini che le riservano quell'attenzione, e quello sguardo, che le nega suo marito, l'Imperatore Francesco Giuseppe d'Austria, intento a corteggiare ragazze che potrebbero essere sue figlie e disorientato dall'inquietudine della moglie. A nulla valgono le fughe dell'imperatrice lontano da corte, o le richieste dei dignitari affinché mantenga un contegno ufficiale degno del suo rango: Elisabetta si sente soffocare nella sua gabbia dorata e percepisce tutta l'ingiustizia del suo tempo e del suo mondo contro tutto il genere femminile.
