Ambientato in Guatemala, nel cuore di comunità di etnia maya, Vulcano racconta un mondo sospeso tra credenze ancestrali ed echi lontani di modernità. Protagonista del film è la giovanissima María, che vive e lavora con la sua famiglia in una piantagione di caffè alle pendici di un vulcano. Nonostante sogni di andare nella "grande città", la sua condizione non le permette di cambiare il proprio destino: a breve la aspetta un matrimonio combinato con Ignacio, il supervisore della piantagione. L'unica via d'uscita si chiama Pepe, un giovane raccoglitore di caffè che vorrebbe andare negli Stati Uniti: Maria lo seduce per poter fuggire insieme a lui, ma dopo promesse e incontri clandestini Pepe se ne va e la abbandona incinta.
