When Voices Meet: One Divided Country; One United Choir; One Courageous Journey / 2015

When Voices Meet: One Divided Country; One United Choir; One Courageous Journey

When Nelson Mandela was finally released from prison, courageous South African musicians broke through Apartheid's barriers to form a 500-voice, multiracial youth choir. Threatened with bombs and thwarted at every turn, they prevailed and railroaded across the country aboard The Peace Train. Singing their way into the hearts, minds and soul of a divided nation in the midst of a civil war, they promoted a peaceful transition to democracy and went on to become Mandela's face of the new nation. When Voices Meet documents the trials, tribulations and triumphs of those musician activists and young choir members. They performed together for seven years; never lost touch with one another; and reunited 20 years later to tell their stories.

Laredoans Speak: Voices on Immigration / 2011

Laredoans Speak: Voices on Immigration

Pepe Serna, our host, and familiar veteran actor takes us through the issues involved in the debate of undocumented immigration. Laredo, Texas has the largest inland (import & export) trade route in the USA, and is located right across the Rio Grande from Nuevo Laredo in Mexico. The combined population of the two Laredos is approximately 750,000. Most residents have family ties between the two cities. Laredoans express their views on undocumented immigration through their unique perspective: directly from the front line. Currently we have over twelve million undocumented immigrants living and working here in the United States; many of them crossed at this border region. Among the topics discussed are the border fence/wall debate, immigration laws, and racism. This documentary strives to make one reexamine their views on the topic of undocumented immigration.

Voices from the Shadows /

Voices from the Shadows

‘Voices from the Shadows’ shows the brave and sometimes heartrending stories of five ME patients and their carers, along with input from Dr Nigel Speight, Prof Leonard Jason and Prof Malcolm Hooper. These were filmed and edited between 2009 and 2011, by the brother and mother of an ME patient in the UK. It shows the devastating consequences that occur when patients are disbelieved and the illness is misunderstood. Severe and lasting relapse occurs when patients are given inappropriate psychological or behavioural management: management that ignores the severe amplification of symptoms that can be caused by increased physical or mental activity or exposure to stimuli, and by further infections. A belief in behavioural and psychological causes, particularly when ME becomes very severe and chronic, following mismanagement, is still taught to medical students and healthcare professionals in the UK. As a consequence, situations similar to those shown in the film continue to occur.

Our voices are not our own / 2020

Our voices are not our own

"Our voices are not our own" explores the concept of voice as a physical and immaterial presence or absence, in relation to broken vocal cycles. Invisible figures wear drawn costumes, created for the film using a chemical-reflective, light-fibre fabric. Soft-pastels and fabric changes in the different light conditions and under flash everything becomes monochrome. The figures wearing these drawings are rendered ghosts, or ghosts of voices, only their shapes visible underneath. The film’s audio is created from distorting frequencies of various digital noises taken from text, email and messaging notifications in addition to breath and heartbeats.

Wye: Voices From the Valley / 2007

Wye: Voices From the Valley

The River Wye runs through some of Britain's most beautiful and varied countryside, from the mountain tops of mid Wales to the wide open spaces of the Severn Estuary. This film is a lyrical portrait of the valley through the eyes of four characters who make their living from the land: a cider maker, a salmon fisherman, a sheep farmer and a beekeeper. It might seem idyllic, but when you live this close to nature a change in the weather can make all the difference between success and failure.
