The Man Who Shot New York / 2019
The life and work of American photographer Harold Feinstein, whose work garnered critical and commercial success. In his 2015 obituary the New York Times declared him “one of the most accomplished recorders of the American experience.” Howard Greenberg says Feinstein “ occupies high ground in the pantheon of street photography” yet, most people, have never heard of him. A prodigious talent, Feinstein photographed life in all its forms, when and where he wished. Whether this was as a draftee in the Korean War, in a Bebop infused Manhattan loft or rural hippy enclave in upstate NY, Harold’s 35mm black and white photographs captured the essence of life with a with a uniquely humanist eye. The re-discovery of Feinstein’s vast and diverse body of work came in his final years and the film meets him then; in his early 80s and with a zen-like appreciation for the life he lived.

This DVD combines two concerts filmed at the Hacienda in 1983. Both were previously available on separate VHS releases. Shoot Your Shot is more dimly lit, but Divine really revs up the show toward the end, with the audience crowding the stage for the closing "Love Reaction." Recorded nine months earlier, Live at the Hacienda is better lit and Divine is more animated throughout. Both concerts feature a hardworking, sweating Divine obscenely bantering with the audience. Both concerts are about 40 minutes and feature Divine performing "Jungle Jezebel," "Born to be Cheap," "Alphabet Rap" and more.

June 17, 1933: On Saturday morning by 7:15, Union Station Kansas City is already bustling with travelers as lawmen escort escaped convict Frank Nash through the station out to a car where he is to be driven back to Leavenworth Penitentiary. Suddenly, the group is attacked by gangsters and the resulting camage from the 30 second firestorm leaves Kansas City and the nation stunned. This film documents events giving rise to the massacre and tells the story of the complex relationship among the Pendergast machine, organized crime, and the gangsters who could feel safe laying low in Kansas City. As the FBI attempted to bring to justice the perpetrators of what J. Edgar Hoover called a "despicable and cowardly act," Kansas City and law enforcement in the United States were forever changed.

Lady, You Shot Me: The Life and Death of Sam Cooke / 2014
Sam Cooke died at the age of 33 on December 11, 1964, at the Hacienda Motel, at 9137 South Figueroa Street, in Los Angeles, California. Answering separate reports of a shooting and of a kidnapping at the motel, police found Cooke's body, clad only in a sports jacket and shoes but no shirt, pants or underwear. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, which was later determined to have pierced his heart. The motel's manager, Bertha Franklin, said she had shot Cooke in self-defense after he broke into her office residence and attacked her. Her account was immediately questioned and disputed by acquaintances.
