Hector Lavoe è stato uno dei più grandi cantanti di salsa della storia. Veniva da Porto Rico, ma si era trasferito a New York con la famiglia a diciassette anni e lì, giovanissimo, aveva trovato la sua strada nella musica come vocalista nell'orchestra di Willie Colón. La sua personale battaglia contro l'industria discografica a colpi di talento (ne aveva da vendere) e carisma non allontanò mai Lavoe dal palco, a farlo furono le droghe alle quali ormai era assuefatto. Parte della sua parabola è narrata nel brano composto da Rubén Blades "El cantante", che appare nell'omonimo film diretto da Leon Ichaso e prodotto da Marc Anthony e Jennifer López in omaggio al grande artista. Nella storia di Lavoe deve averci riconosciuto qualcosa della sua, il cubano americano Leon Ichaso che, arrivato a New York negli stessi anni del grande salsero, ha trovato la sua strada come regista nella città le cui notti sono cadenzate dai ritmi latini.
