Questo documentario è stato rilasciato in Francia nel 1953, appena 8 settimane prima che Tenzing e Hillary conquistassero l'Everest. La prima vetta di 8000 metri ad essere scalata fu l'Annapurna I, tre anni prima nel 1950, da una spedizione francese che comprendeva Maurice Herzog, Lionel Terray, Gaston Rébuffat, Jean Crouzy, Marcel Schutz, Jacques Oudot, Francis de Noyelle e il direttore della fotografia Marcel Ichac, l'unico ad aver già fatto un'esperienza himalayana (vedi 'Karakoram', film del 1936 premiato alla Mostra del Cinema di Venezia nel 1938). Si tratta di un'avventura epica filmata in condizioni difficili da un esperto di cinema di montagna dell'epoca, che si concluse con una vittoria ma anche con un susseguirsi di disastri e feriti.
