Look Then Below / 2019
Ben Rivers' films study the otherworldly, looking for places and stories outside the daily conventions of reality. Look Then Below was filmed in a Somerset transformed into a coloured, mist-enveloped island in an oily ocean with a cave basking in a subterranean glow. Time seems to stand still there. After Slow Action and Urth, this is the final part of a trilogy developed with American SF author Mark von Schlegell.

“ In the mid-1990s, I followed several technicians working in New York's independent feature film world. I asked them questions about their work, their dreams, and their personal lives. Shot on the sets of three low budget films and in the crew's various NYC apartments, Below the Line offers a slice of what it's like to chart a creative path in film, to begin an unconventional career, and to balance a demanding professional life with a personal life. This documentary short was produced as my thesis project for a Certificate in Culture & Media at NYU, a joint program of the departments of anthropology and cinema studies(1997). Many wonderful people donated time and equipment to the effort, and I thank them by name in the video credits.” - Ashley David, Vimeo

Our second annual halloween short film made safely during quarantine! Inspired by War of the Worlds and B Creature features from the late 1950s. We worked without a crew so everyone involved did several jobs. Brandon directed, operated the camera, edited, sound designed and did voice over work. Ama directed, wrote, designed the lighting, costuming, operated the fog machine, fire fx, blood, and the tentacles! Which we also made as well! Jared and Mark did voice over characters as well as performing on camera. Rozi did her own stunts, helped with make up and costuming and Amber helped with set design as well as being on camera! It was a little project made for fun in a time when we need it the most! We hope you enjoy and happy halloween!

Above Below / 2008
Cam Archer's hypnotic short film takes form as a letter into the void. A middle-aged woman reads a note to a lost friend while slowed home movies of an adolescent boy flash across the screen. With movements blurred and the picture flaring with light, the image seems to register the uncertain memory of one left behind. "Have you forgotten about me," the woman asks. "We left a mark on each other, didn't we?" We don't know the nature of the relationship or the loss but the haunting conjuring power of cinema works its primal spell. ABOVE BELOW is another remarkable selection from the Cinemad Almanac. (Fandor)

Venezuela from Below / 2004
In the film “Venezuela from Below,” the true actors in the social process are able to speak: the grassroots. After an introduction by philosopher Carlos Lazo, workers from the oil company PDVSA in Puerto La Cruz report how in 2002/2003 they protected the refinery from breaking down during the oil sabotage, which was pawned off as a strike, and how they were able to reinstate oil production. Several farmers from a newly founded cooperative in Aragua report on their process of self organization, on the literacy campaign, and how things should continue. A women’s bank project in Miranda and several loan recipients from Caracas’ disadvantaged district, 23 de Enero, present their projects. Indígena community members near the Orinoco river in Bolívar speak about how their demands and struggles are reflected in the constitution and what has changed for them. (and more!)
Above and Below the Minhocão / 2014
Above and Below the Minhocao (2014) surveys The Minhocão, an elevated overpass located in São Paulo, Brazil. The Minhocão is closed-off to vehicular traffic on Sundays, allowing for unobstructed pedestrian movement. Above and Below the Minhocao not only pans the road but also below the overpass, and into an adjoining courtyard and neighbouring sidewalks. Continuity in the work is provided not only by The Minhocão but by the characters inhabiting the film – a couple standing in the middle of the thoroughfare, a man talking on his mobile, people on bicycles passing through – but also by an adjacent black-and-white mosaic sidewalk and the road itself.
