A Canadian Winter Carnival / 1909
According to Harper's Bazaar (8 March 1884), the Montreal Winter Carnival was founded as a means of promoting tourism to the country, aiming “to show that life in Canada may be not only endurable during the winter months, but enjoyable.” During the annual celebration, thousands of tourists would journey to Quebec to experience the charms of the Canadian winter through various snow sports, parades, races, and masquerade balls.

Filmed across the eastern half of North America in the 1970's, CARNIVALS is an homage to Speedy, Yak-Yak, Obie, Lobster Boy, and all the other carnies who lived and worked on Amusements of America. Theirs was a world within a world, traveling through the chaos of post-Viet Nam America as a community of freaks, strippers, clowns and bosses. To them, there world was sane; it was the rest of America that was crazy. In an era when Viet Nam madness was still tearing at the country the carnival was their refuge, their home.

Based on the classic musical story by Camille Saint-Saens and accompanied by a full orchestra, this wonderful puppet performance will enchant and amuse children of all ages. Jim Gamble has been creating and building puppets for over 35 years. He is the master puppeteer for the Los Angeles Music Center, and has built puppets for Disneyland and Disney World.

Carnival in the Clothes Cupboard / 1941
A colorful cartoon commercial for soap flakes seems the last place that the realities of wartime life should creep in. A clothes cupboard opens to reveal a fantasy world where figures on fabric patterns come to life, and a neglected clown is shunned until he bathes in Lux Flakes. But in a last-minute coda, the clown returns to break the animated fourth wall and tell the audience that the product will not be made again till the war is over.

"A short film I made for my niece Alana, on her 4th birthday. It was filmed at Chapeltown Carnival in Leeds, set to ‘Amor en Jacumã’ by Brazilian musician Lucas Santtana. It was entirely edited in camera – all the double and triple exposures were done using my Nikon R10 camera. I hand-processed the film too." — M.J.
