Come Luciano Lutring divenne un bandito famoso nell'Italia degli anni '60 (ma ricercato anche dalla polizia francese) con la rapina a una gioielleria di via Montenapoleone a Milano. Caso raro di instant movie riuscito. Lizzani e il suo sceneggiatore Ugo Pirro ne fanno un ritratto di taglio semigiornalistico _ secco, veloce, in sapiente equilibrio tra azione e disegno incisivo dei personaggi _ che ridimensiona un dilettante del crimine, un balordo invasato che entra in un mondo di delinquenti e poliziotti più professionisti di lui. "E il film smonta a tal punto il personaggio che rischia di renderlo sbiadito" (T. Kezich). Tra gli interpreti _ Hoffman è un Lutring attendibile, Volonté cesella un ambiguo poliziotto _ fa macchia L. Gastoni, una Candida Lutring scavata in profondità.
