It starts off well enough with some nice build-up in a sprawling deserted farm town (a nice backlot on a Taiwan location) as various motley characters show up at the town's only open establishment, a tavern/inn, with some evil doings in mind. When advance men for the title bandits show up to lay the groundwork for a raid, they round up all available hostages but one. That one is the film's lone hero (Chang Yi), whose motivation is simply stated—he's there to check up on family—but no one believes him. At the thirty-minute mark, he launches into an eight-minute battle with the two bandit chieftains, hand-to-hand with one (Sammo Hung) and swordplay with the other (an actor I didn't recognize). It's a well-staged brawl and it spreads all over the empty town.

In 1913 early French film pioneer Victorin-Hippolyte Jasset died abruptly at the age of 51. His filmography of about 60 titles includes all film genres but is today mostly lost. He was particularly interested in detective or crime genres and with series like Nick Carter and Zigomar he is considered as one of the creators of the serial. The spectacular siege of Jules Bonnot's Gang at Choisy-le-Roi near Paris on April 28th 1912 inspired Jasset to make this 'Bandits en automobile'. French audiences recognized immediately the resemblances with the actual Bonnot Gang, a reason for which the film was prohibited in many cities.

In seguito al fatto che un riccone di nome Brittle (Finlayson) sposa in stato di ebbrezza una donna in una gabbia di leoni, il fratello di questa donna pretende una gran somma di denaro. Brittle, allora, chiama un avvocato (Laurel) che però è un incapace. Allora Brittle e il suo maggiordomo (Hardy) cercano di fuggire, ma mentre preparano i bagagli, l'avvocato li avvisa che il cognato, la moglie e la figliastra di Brittle nelle vicinanze per ucciderlo. Allora il maggiordomo ha un'idea: travestire l'avvocato da donna con un grande vestito che permetta loro di passare con Brittle nascosto sotto l'avvocato dietro il vestito e far passare il maggiordomo per il marito dell'avvocato travestito. Il trucco viene però presto scoperto e i tre fuggono in un parco giochi inseguiti dai parenti di Brittle.
