With global tourism on the rise, the short film "CITIZEN TOURIST" tries to look at the tourist as a species with exotic and particular quirks, inviting us to look at ourselves and our group behaviours when we fill that role.

Berlin/nilreB: Tourist Journal / 1988

"It's a letter to Berlin; a graveyard meditation (with The Wall as its marker). I spent eight months in Berlin (West) as a DAAD fellow; a true guest worker, in 1986-87. I wanted to respond in some way to this strange place. I wanted to describe the landscape of Cold War Berlin, which immediately means dichotomy and invoking the imaginary; the landscape that isn't there as well as the one that is. The only spoken text in the tape are a segment of the John F. Kennedy 'Ich bin ein Berliner' speech, given at the Berlin Wall in 1962, and fragments of radio news reports, from both DDR and Bundesrepublik broadcasts."

Soran is a Kurdish refugee from Iran. Fulvia is a Franco-Italian filmmaker who met this rather gifted young man in Iraqi Kurdistan. When he tells her that he wants to make his way to the UK, she gets him a camera… Thus began a 9 months’ clandestine obstacle course from Erbil to Liverpool via a Greek prison cell for illegal foreigners, all recorded on camera. Each time Soran found himself in a tight spot, Fulvia came to his rescue. This is their four-handed film: the adventurous crossing of "Fortress Europe" by a Kurdish refugee with a sense of humour and a guardian angel at his side. Soran achieved his goal: turning his life into a movie.

Takur (Mike Lucock), Indian descent moneylender, hires thugs to collect debts from Nabil's father, a drunkard, gambler, and does not have responsibility. Because the father is never at home, the moneylender charges to Nabil's mother. Seeing this, Nabil takes the responsibility and says that she would pay all her father’s debts. Nabil promises to return the Rp 100 million debt within five days. Then, Nabil gets a phone call informing that her father is hospitalized. When she arrives at the hospital, the father is unconscious, because he has been through heart surgery. The father won gambling. He was so happy, so he got heart attack, The father brought home certificate as a guarantee for the medical expenses.

Tourist Home is a 2013 Malayalam thriller film directed by Shebi. The film traces a series of incidents that take place in the 10 rooms of a tourist home. The plot revolves around the following characters: two young boys who have a bad past due to their unethical lives, an old man who has come for the medical aid for his grand son in the medical college, a policeman and a whore, a woman who is forced to search unlawful means to earn money to meet the medical expenses for her ill husband, a man who fear to attend an interview and his friend, an astrologer who chants different ways to get a peaceful mind, a daughter who tries to remind the unethical ways of her father, a woman, her daughter and dance master to participate in a dance reality show, a woman who has come to abort her pregnancy from her husband's friend, and a gang who has taken a room for gambling, who are all staying in that ten rooms of the Tourist Home.

The film is about one of the greatest social hot spots in Estonia during the Soviet times when apartments were distributed by the state, telling the story of a real estate agent and a homeless man. Mass immigration in 1944-1988 led to demographic conflict. Free apartments were mainly given to immigrants despite the fact that local people badly needed places of residence as well. They are not tourists, they live here, but they haven't got a home.

On a very cheerful pop music, this film praises the beauties of the landscapes, wildlife, modern architecture and the sweet life of the settlers. Many tourists came from nearby White Rhodesia to indulge in the pleasures of the sea, hotels, safaris. The few Mozambicans are employed to serve them. This film was shot while a few hundred kilometers to the north, tens of thousands of Portuguese soldiers faced the separatist fighters of Frelimo.

I was nine years old when my mother took me away from home for the first time – to Leningrad. For those of us behind the Iron Curtain, this was a Big Trip. Later, I couldn’t remember anything I had seen or done except for a large, colourful tourist bus from Switzerland – the only object with which I wanted to be photographed. That bus symbolized the world for me – large and beckoning, full of travel and adventure. Now I am 35 and I’ve been to 39 countries. 20 years of wandering around the world with a camera makes one wonder – why on earth do I want to travel?
