Painted Skin is based on one of Pu Songling's classic short stories in Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio. Zhou Xun stars as Xiao Wei, a fox spirit that feasts on human hearts in order to maintain her lovely, youthful appearance. When General Wang Sheng (Chen Kun) 'rescues' her from a band of bandits and brings her home, trouble brews as the demon falls in love with the general.

I benestanti Madeleine e William Lasserre (lei pittrice, lui meteorologo in pensione) sono sposati e vivono a Grenoble. Durante un'escursione nel Vercors, si imbattono in un casolare dismesso, situato in un delizioso ed affascinante contesto agreste; decidono impulsivamente di acquistarlo e ristrutturarlo. Un po' di tempo dopo, i Lasserre si trasferiscono nella loro nuova abitazione e vengono accolti da Adam e da sua moglie Eva, loro vicini di casa; l'incontro da vita ad un'immediata amicizia. Adam è cieco ed è il sindaco del paese limitrofo; lui e la moglie, alquanto disinibiti e un po' sfacciati, nel corso di una serata rivelano loro di come pratichino da tempo (e con gran piacere) lo scambio di coppia e gli propongono di partecipare. Madeleine e William, nonostante l'incredulità e l'imbarazzo iniziale, finiscono per farsi trascinare dai loro amici e la notte in cui la casa di Adam ed Eva viene distrutta da un incendio, li accolgono come ospiti ed accettano la loro proposta.
