Un souvenir d’archives / 2021

Archivist and researcher Isabelle Ullern investigates the official archives of philosopher Sarah Kofman. “I become her ventriloquist”, she says. Digging into the archives, she brings back the memories of Sarah, who committed suicide in October 1994 — her works as a philosopher and her past as a hidden child of the Holocaust… For the duration of the film, Isabelle embodies Sarah.

Souvenir of Lebanon / 1983

Writes Schneemann: "Souvenir of Lebanon follows a long video pan through destroyed Palestinian and Lebanese villages. In 1982-83, Israeli ceaseless bombardments destroyed bridges, farms, roads, hospitals, schools, libraries, apartments, and historic sites and towns dating back 2000 years. The live color footage was received unexpectedly from an anonymous news photographer. It is intercut with black and white disaster stills I re-shot from daily newspapers, edited in juxtaposition with color slides of bucolic Lebanon given to me on the day the Lebanese tourist bureau in New York city closed." "Souvenir of Lebanon is the video component for the kinetic sculpture War Mop; a flailing motorized mop rises on plexiglass cams and is dropped, slapping the video monitor every eight seconds. The sound on the video recorded layers of reverberation as the mop hit the monitor."

Remembering the Ashes: Incendies Through Their Eyes /

In Jordan, in the heart of the Middle East, Iraqi, Palestinian and Lebanese refugees are working on the filming of "Incendies", an adaptation of Wajdi Mouawad's play. Whether extras or onlookers, these exiles once experienced scenes very similar to the ones depicted in Denis Villeneuve's movie. "Remembering the Ashes: Incendies Through Their Eyes" explores their views on the vicious war and cycle of violence being recreated before their eyes, and by their own efforts.

Research / Souvenir (Dialogues) / 2018

Research / Souvenir (Dialogues), utilizes found Super 8mm footage from Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and audio from ethnographic research gathered among Zimbabwean migrant women in Cape Town, South Africa. Part 1, Research, reveals the personal thoughts and challenges faced by researcher/filmmaker Horn in the field. Part 2, Souvenir (Dialogues), offers the research participants an opportunity to question Horn about his choice of souvenirs from the field, providing the political and economic backdrop to the ongoing exodus of Zimbabweans and leads up to the removal of long standing President Robert Mugabe on November 21, 2017.

The Souvenir / 2008

Produced for Glass Eye Pix as part of their 2008 Creepy Christmas Online Film Festival, in which each short was inspired by the inhabitants of a Christmas diorama advent calendar. Each filmmaker was assigned a specific date and given the props that were used in that window to use in their short. This is the twelfth film in the series.

In 1967, in the middle of the Chinese cultural revolution, an opera singer is sent to the other side of the country to be "re-educated". He leaves behind his young pregnant wife. Seven years later, rehabilitated, he is allowed to return to his native village. He will not find his wife, who has since died. And one thought obsesses him: How to recognize his child, whom he has never seen, how to go to meet him?

At a dusty crossroads in the desert city of Niamey, Niger, a crippled beggar is sitting in his wheelchair. He is Philippe Koudjina, who was once a successful photographer. In 1960s during the euphoria that followed independence, young people danced the twist and rock ‘n’ roll. Koudjina took snapshots and made a good living. Now, his negatives are decaying in a rusty cabinet. These snapshots now have artistic value. In Paris and New York, large sums are paid for photography like this. There is hope for Koudjina as two French connoisseurs are now trying to launch his work on the art circuit.

The film tells the intertwined story of two slums that were built, forty years apart, on the same territory. In Massy, in the southern suburbs of Paris, we lived at a time of economic growth, full employment and promising future. It was the 60s. We are at the beginning of the 2000s. They dwell in a climate of crisis and exclusion. Most of these are Roma and are fleeing a country that rejects them.

Téo Hernandez's series of Memories... transcribes perfectly the filmmaker's vertiginous ability to capture a city from a few well-chosen places; the juxtaposition of architecture and people creates a mosaic of sensations, exalted by the syncopation of the zooms and cascading shots, clues to the "manner", the "filmmaker's paw".
