In 1979, Iranian Women invite the American feminist Kate Millett to celebrate March 8, the International Women's Day, in Tehran. On March 7, the religious leaders announce that women have to wear the Islamic veil. From March 8 to March 13, women and liberals demonstrate in the streets against the veil. A crew of four French feminists filmed these historical events before being expelled by the mullahs.

The Iranian refugee Amir finds two golden retrievers while jogging on the beach. They have slipped their leash in the hands of Marijke, a middle-aged woman who takes out her daughter Emma's dogs every day and does her housekeeping. Marijke is not capable of keeping her selfish daughter in line and has no authority over the dogs. Amir wants to help her. When Emma hears she has subcontracted the dogs to a refugee, mother and daughter come into conflict. Emma looks for a replacement, but is eventually forced to ask Amir. When they meet, they get on at once, until his residence permit runs out.

Iranian Journey is a documentary road movie with Massoumeh Soltan Baloghie, the first woman long-distance bus driver in Iran and, probably, the whole Islamic world. On a 22-hour bus trip north to south across Iran from Tehran to Bandar Abbas, Massoumeh talks about her life and aspirations. Her passengers chat, eat, sleep and tell their stories, and we meet people in the road stop cafés, on the sides of the road and in the cities en route.

My mother was arrested in 1981, a dissident to the Islamic Republic of Iran. I was 8 months old. She was imprisoned and tortured. Seven years later she disappeared, during the 1988 massacre of political prisoners that claimed thousands. In Iran, this remains taboo. Examining this history of violence and denial, I wonder: how does an absence of physical bodies restrain our memories, in cases when politics touches upon the most intimate aspects of human life? And when personal experience is the only thing to bear witness to politics?
