Pur con un grosso conto in banca, frutto di molti omicidi a pagamento, Martin Q. Blank (Cusack) è insoddisfatto. È in cura da un riluttante psicanalista (Arkin) e quando la sua segretaria (Joan Cusack) gli passa l'invito di andare a Grosse Pointe per la riunione decennale dei suoi compagni di liceo, accetta. In quella cittadina, tra l'altro, ha un lavoretto da fare. Lì la sua crisi si aggrava nel conflitto tra passato e presente. "È una riflessione non troppo seria sul sistema di valori americano" (John Cusack, anche coproduttore e cosceneggiatore). Intelligente, però. Nonostante il versante pulp alla Tarantino (il dialogo tra Cusack e Aykroyd con le pistole sotto il tavolo), è una black comedy più seria di quel che appare: attraverso la parodia dei generi traspare la satira. Lo sguardo del regista è quello del cinema degli anni '70, la colonna sonora è degli anni '80 (Clash, Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Siouxsie and the Banshees). Armitage è un regista da rivalutare.

In un paese in cui tutto è a punta, teste degli abitanti comprese, nasce Oblio, un bambino con la testa tonda, senza alcuna traccia di punta. Dopo qualche tempo in cui sembra essere accettato normalmente, a causa di uno scontro con un bambino invidioso Oblio finisce per essere sottoposto a un processo e cacciato dal paese. A quel punto comincia un viaggio nella foresta "pointless" insieme al suo fedele cane Arrow.

Quando il comando strategico aereo nordamericano viene messo in allarme per l'avvistamento di un oggetto volante non identificato diretto verso gli Stati Uniti, i bombaridieri atomici si alzano in volo. Una volta cessato l'allarme i velivoli fanno rientro alla base. Ma un giorno capita che uno stormo, a causa di un guasto alle apparecchiature elettroniche, prosegue il volo in direzione di Mosca. Tra frenetici scambi di ordini avviene l'irreparabile... Con questo film Lumet torna grande, dopo un periodo di pellicole teatrali francamente al di sotto delle sue possibilità. il merito va ascritto anche a un cast di eccellenti attori.
