The Everyday Ritual of Solitude Hatching Monkeys / 2014

Layered and manually altered 16mm footage intertwines with the soundtrack and the narrative, presented through subtitles, to tell the story of a man who moves away from the sea to escape death by water. He soon finds himself alone when his co-workers go to the beach and never return. Society becomes a stranger and his imagination becomes his only friend. He dials a random number and a romantic conversation about loneliness and the absurdity of reality ensues. His world starts acquiring meaning as he realizes part-time-singer monkeys are running the show.

Ritual Journeys / 2011

The film is an intimate portrait of Merayk, an 80 years old Lepcha shaman or Padim. Merayk lives with his family in Dzongu, a Lepcha reserve in North Sikkim. He performs healing rituals for individuals as well as rituals for the well-being of the household, the clan and his village community. Cameraman Dawa Lepcha followed Meyrak and recorded his daily life and rituals between 2003 and 2007.

This is certainly a magnificent cinematic art experience. The blending of beautiful natural settings from all over the world with the latest techniques in computer morphing and editing to create marvelous suggestive and evocative scenes in flowing transformation is the closest you can come to a psychedelic experience without physically inducing one. In fact, at one point I found myself in a genuinely altered state of consciousness just watching the screen. The music is beautifully rendered and keyed to the visual progressions---much like, but better than, Disney's Fantasia. One reviewer asked what he could do with it. I would suggest using the "Loop" option on a widescreen t.v. as a party background, but you are liable to have many of your guests quietly glued to the t.v. set rather than partying. It's that good. Also don't miss the "Blue Eye" option. This is an audio-visual feast and tour d'force."

The Ndebele women are known throughout the world for their vivid and multi faceted art forms, especially the colorful embellishment of their houses. Their arid land is pierced with blocks of color, each dwelling singular in a stylized way. Their resplendent clothing also boldly proclaims their identity. This unique film also explores Ndebele rituals never shown on film before. We see their fertility rites, a celebration that bonds them to their ancestral tradition. Ndebele performance art shows how traditional forms of expression can become a vehicle for political empowerment today. Nelson Mandela referred to the Ndebele as a 'Rainbow People.' Despite a history of racial oppression, forced removal from their ancestral land and economic privation, their pride and sense of joy has endured.

World Uprising: Earth Sound Transmission Ritual / 1971

This film documents actions performed for World Uprising by Taii Ashizawa and Taku Furusawa, who worked together as Satsuma Workshop. According to the art magazine Bijutsu Techō, Ashizawa acting on behalf of the Interstellar Vibration Association and conducted an Earth Sound Transmission Ritual consisting of three parts. In Ritual One, four people respond to the four fundamental elements (fire, water, earth, air) and emanate earth sounds through psychokinesis. In Ritual Two, the sound of the earth is transmitted via radio waves. Ritual Three shows the sound of the earth extinguished in a fire on an altar, and reproduced and transmitted into outer space through the wisdom of a fire deity. The film documents Ritual One, as well as Taku Furusawa is performing Ritual One / EVENT at the same site and going into convulsions.
