Carlos is the Colombian father of Ecuadorian filmmaker Penagos. The stories he told her as a child were more innocent variations on his real-life experiences as a member of a guerrilla army. Filming him during a long car journey, Penagos encourages her father to tell the real versions of the stories. What he reveals offers an insight to the other side of his life, away from home, fighting Colombian state forces. Divided into chapters and interspersed with shadow puppet plays and stage performances that re-enact Carlos’ tales, Not a Bedtime Story is a fascinating exploration of Latin American identity, which has often combined harsh reality with magical realism, and an acknowledgement of how little we often know about those closest to us.

Daddy / 1973

Daddy, filmed in cooperation with movie director Peter Whitehead, discovers the connection between a father and little girl. Like the majority of Niki De Saint Phalle’s films, the flick combines autobiography with imagination, mixing erotic scenes of incest with a reverse of energy as the female character humors the daddy figure. Saint Phalle narrates the film, offering an almost psycho-analytical explanation of its content and explains the different inexplicable.

Seven brief scenes, each with a couple, explore the surprises and the changes of heart that can occur during sexual encounters. Only one of the seven couples has been in bed together before; several are strangers or new acquaintances. A prostitute and her john, an older woman and a youth who follows her home, two women friends, a gay man with a straight man, a man with distinctive ideas about soap and water, a woman who wants the light left on, and a Spanish-speaking woman with a French-speaking man make for an array of possibilities and unanticipated consequences. Bedtime Stories & Songs is a 1986 Sesame Street direct-to-video compilation, released on VHS as part of the My Sesame Street Home Video label. The video was re-released with different segments under the new title of Sleepytime Songs & Stories in 1996, and on DVD in 2005. The framing story involves Big Bird speaking to the audience, offering advice on the best ways to fall asleep. A Honker and her baby stop by, and Telly arrives for a sleepover with heaps of cuddly toys that he couldn't sleep without. Buster the Horse demonstrates how to fall asleep standing up and Susan comments from her apartment window.
