"A", un regista greco che vive in esilio negli Stati Uniti, torna nella città natale a partecipare ad una proiezione speciale di uno dei suoi film estremamente controversi. Ma l'interesse vero di A. è un altro - le bobine del primo film girato dai fratelli Manakia, che, agli albori dell'era del cinema, avevano instancabilmente attraversato i Balcani e, senza riguardo per il conflitto nazionale ed etnico, avevano registrato la storia della regione e dei costumi. Paris, France, February 2, 1922. The novel Ulysses, by Irish writer James Joyce (1882-1941), is published by US poet Sylvia Beach (1887-1962), owner of the small bookstore Shakespeare & Co. The book, whose writing consumed seven years of Joyce's life, years in which his family was in financial need, would have a profound and unprecedented impact on 20th century literature and culture.

Ercole cattura Ulisse, proprio mentre stava ritornando a Itaca, per ordine di Zeus. L'eroe intende consegnarlo a Polifemo, privato della vista dall'eroe molti anni prima, ma durante il viaggio, i due eroi vengono catturati da esseri metà uomini e metà uccelli. Riusciti a scappare, Ulisse viene di nuovo fatto prigioniero, questa volta dai Trogloditi; Ercole continua il suo viaggio e giunge in Grecia dal padre della sua fidanzata Elena per organizzare una spedizione contro il popolo di mostri che ha intenzione di uccidere Ulisse.

James Joyce's 'Ulysses' / 1988
From the series "The Modern World: Ten Great Writers", this playful documentary introduces James Joyce's most famous work "Ulysses". It includes fantastic adaptations to film from passages of the novel. It also includes excerpts from a book written by Joyce's friend, the artist Frank Budgen, entitled "James Joyce and the making of Ulysses". Amongst those interviewed is author Anthony Burgess.
