Fragments of a Self Portrait / 1974

Fragments of a Self Portrait

Photographed in black-and-white on Sony Portapak videotape, Andrea Callard used one of the earliest portable video devices to capture herself ascending the stairs to her Lispenard Street studio in Downtown New York. She is wearing casts on both of her feet, pounding each stair with great effort, the once ubiquitous scratch and wobble of videotape distinguishing this piece from the work of her contemporaries using film. When she reaches the top, she removes the casts, revealing the artist's bare, naked feet, suggesting that perhaps these cocoons must be shed before she can enter the sacred space of her studio. - Stela Jelincic

Lucian Freud: A Self Portrait / 2019

Lucian Freud: A Self Portrait

For the first time in history the Royal Academy of Arts in London, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, is bringing together Lucian Freud’s self-portraits. The exhibition will display more than 50 paintings, prints and drawings in which this modern master of British art turned his unflinching eye firmly on himself. One of the most celebrated painters of our time, Lucian Freud is also one of very few 20th-century artists who portrayed themselves with such consistency. Spanning nearly seven decades his self-portraits give a fascinating insight into both his psyche and his development as a painter, from his earliest portrait painted in 1939 to the final one executed 64 years later. When seen together, his portraits represent an engrossing study into the dynamic of ageing and the process of self-representation. This intensely compelling exhibition creates a unique opportunity for EXHIBITION ON SCREEN to reveal the life’s work of a master in one show.

Auto Portrait / Self Portrait Post Partum

SPPP is an autobiographical experimental film exploring the ramifications of the devastating breakup of a romantic relationship. The film examines my own emotional responses in the context of how this experience is culturally represented. Painstakingly handmade, the visual and sound treatments evoke different phases of the relationship (from passionate attachment to escalating conflict to inexplicable breakup) and the various phases of the grieving process - from denial, to yearning, to anger, to final liberation: a healing release effected through the making of this film. A triptych of self-portraits-entire camera rolls, each subjected to different methods of extreme interventions on the celluloid itself-are presented in a series of tableaux punctuated by quotes reflecting on romantic love scratched into the filmstrip.

Self Portrait After Raban Take Measure / 2008

Self Portrait After Raban Take Measure

Self Portrait looks for an approach to a specific relationship between the duration of a work and material conditions in the projection as did William Raban in the film-performance Take Measure. The main difference is that Raban’s work was made when cinematic media had distinct physical properties linking medium directly to image - this self portrait recognizes that there is no such simple materiality for cinema following the emergence of digital processes. Instead the work takes a conceptual base – the speed of light and the time taken for light to travel from the sun to illuminate objects on earth –thus the duration of 8 minutes 20 seconds.
