STING: The Journey & The Labyrinth / 2007

The Journey And The Labyrinth: The Music Of John Dowland, directed and produced by the Emmy-award winning team, Jim Gable and Ann Kim of Graying & Balding, Inc., delves deeper into Sting's relationship with the sixteenth century figure, who has captivated generations with his songs composed primarily for lute, which Sting tackles along with esteemed lutenist Edin Karamazov. Filmed appropriately at Lake House, Sting's 16-century manor house in Wiltshire, and in the ancient gardens of Il Palagio, his home in Italy, the DVD also features the performers before a live audience at St. Luke's Church in London. Interspersed between performances of such timeless Dowland songs such as "Can She Excuse My Wrongs," "Come Again," and "Flow My Tears," are discussions with musicologists David Pinto and Anthony Rooley of the composer's place in music history and his relevance today, plus recitations by Sting from Dowland's personal correspondence.

"Labyrinth" is a groundbreaking multi-screen 45-minute presentation produced for Chamber III of the Labyrinth at Expo 67 in Montreal, using 35 mm and 70 mm film projected simultaneously on multiple screens. A film without commentary in which multiple images, sometimes complementary, sometimes contrasting, draw the viewer through the different stages of a labyrinth. The tone of the film moves from great joy to wrenching sorrow; from stark simplicity to ceremonial pomp. It is life as it is lived by the people of the world, each one, as the film suggests, in a personal labyrinth. Re-released in 1979 as "In the Labyrinth" by the National Film Board of Canada in a 21-minute single projection format.

Sting's interest in this Elizabethan composer is unflagging. In this fascinating new 80-minute DVD music-documentary, he tells us how this inspiring project all came about, from genesis to realization. The program, which will also be sold worldwide as a TV special, is directed by Jim Gable, Sting's long-time associate and the director of his previous DVDs (All this Time and Inside The Songs of Sacred Love). Sting invites us behind the scenes as he learns the music with his teacher Richard Levitt and rehearses with lutenist Edin Karamazov in the unique atmosphere of his Tuscan villa and at his Elizabethan home and gardens near London. The DVD features Sting's thrilling never-before-released live performances in London and New York. It also includes interviews with Dowland experts and a photo gallery. Plus a bonus CD of various recordings of live performances.

Labyrinth / 1981

The work 'Labyrinth' opens with grainy and aged sepia tone images of the artist textured with film scratches. These images are set to the sound of an old film projector evoking a nostalgic and retro feel, as if the artist is evoking memories of herself. In the opening scenes we are introduced to a still shots of the artist performing different facial expressions. America plays with the notion of capturing differing moments in time. This is done in a stop-frame mode, where single frames of her expressions are placed one after the other creating a rickety and shaky feel to the movement of the imagery. As the work progresses, America multiplies the single frame in a grid across the screen.

Labyrinth /

Labyrinth was filmed in Malmö in the south of Sweden in the summer of 2012. It forms a trilogy together with Landscape (1985 – 1987) and Passages – Portrait of a City (2001). It is a minimal film based on time, place and movement and like Passages, it is also a portrait of a city, but of a different and more intimate kind.
