Strombazzatissimo esordio di Matt Dillon alla regia, il film è in realtà un innocuo noir, ambientato in una Cambogia convenzionalmente sordida e umidiccia, con attori sfocati (Caan) o fuori parte (Depardieu). Fra i numi tutelari citati dallo stesso Dillon, vi sono Graham Greene, Conrad e "Apocalypse now": si notano alcuni echi del primo, poco o niente del secondo, mentre sul terzo è meglio, per carità, non pronunciarsi
