Fragments: Surviving Pieces of Lost Films / 2011

Among the pieces featured in Fragments are the final reel of John Ford's The Village Blacksmith (1922) and a glimpse at Emil Jannings in The Way of All Flesh (1927), the only Oscar®-winning performance in a lost film. Fragments also features clips from such lost films as Cleopatra (1917), starring Theda Bara; The Miracle Man (1919), with Lon Chaney; He Comes Up Smiling (1918), starring Douglas Fairbanks; an early lost sound film, Gold Diggers of Broadway (1929), filmed in early Technicolor, and the only color footage of silent star Clara Bow, Red Hair (1928). The program is rounded out with interviews of film preservationists involved in identifying and restoring these films. Also featured is a new interview with Diana Serra Cary, best known as "Baby Peggy", one of the major American child stars of the silent era, who discusses one of the featured fragments, Darling of New York (1923).

The Who: Fragments Fan Club DVD / 2007

This DVD from THE WHO, called Fragments, went out to platinum members of their fan club. The film combines live footage from the band’s 2006 dates with an in-depth behind the scenes look at The Who on the road. The movie features unprecedented access to Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey’s offstage life on the road, showing them traveling from gig to gig, meeting fans before the shows, and warming up prior to hitting the stage. Among The Who classics included in the documentary are ‘I Can’t Explain’, ‘Who Are You’, ‘Cry If You Want’, ‘Relay’, ‘Eminence Front’, ‘Baba O’Riley’, and ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’, alongside newer material including ‘Mike Post Theme’, ‘Black Widow’s Eyes’, and ‘Man In A Purple Dress’. The film was directed by Justin Kreutzmann, who has been the primary cinematographer for Townshend and girlfriend Rachel Fuller’s In The Attic webcasts over the past year. He is the son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann.

In 1961, during a founding conference in Belgrade which gathered leaders of 25 countries and 17 liberation movements, the Non-Aligned Movement was officially created. Marking the era by speaking up about decolonization, disarmament, and opposition to racism, this movement is notably absent from Western history books.

Renegades: Fragments from a Diary of Three Years' Experience 1970-1973 / 1974

A fragmented film, largely following street performer George Shevtsov at the 1970 Vietnam Moratorium, the Odyssey Pop Festival at Wallacia in 1971, and street theatre sneezing for lunchtime crowds. The film then takes a darker turn, contrasting audio from a court case with footage of police.

Oggi quelle immagini di feste casalinghe, uscite di gruppo e incontri amorosi, a volte clandestini, si collocano come contrappeso, pietra di paragone e rari documenti in dialogo con le interviste individuali che Barreau torna a registrare oggi con le stesse persone. Il fine è ricordare, a scopo terapeutico, dettagli, anche molto intimi, di ogni relazione, e confrontare le rispettive versioni delle cose, per capire cosa, nella memoria emotiva, sia rimasto. Un gioco di rispecchiamenti che presto si rivela una sorta di terapia individuale e in qualche modo anche di un gruppo.

The project “Fragments” features a series of iconic opera scenes recorded during lockdown at musicAeterna’s home residence, Dom Radio in St Petersburg. With their signature perfectionism and dedication, Teodor Currentzis and the musicians have spent many hours rehearsing and recording in the studio in order to capture the true expressiveness of the performed masterpieces. Each of the recorded scenes will get its own visualization by various filmmakers who will create videos that reflect the concepts behind the music. The first recording in the series is taken from Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata and is made in collaboration with NOIR Films (St Petersburg), a team of video artists that specializes in experimental films and video art.
