Absences / 2013
Absence means heartbreak and lack. A kind of inner turmoil then sets in, which often leads to a personal quest. At the origin of the film is the director's intimate drama of seeing her mother, suffering from Alzheimer's disease, drift away from her as her memory fades. This apprehension of a coming separation serves as a link to other beings struggling with a form of absence.
Topology of an Absence / 2021
Combining music and film, this work is based on archival footage from the 1920s captured in Lebanon by Pathé and Gaumont. “Topology of an Absence” proposes a new way to look at this archive, a hundred years after unnamed camera operators filmed the city of Beirut and captured bodies, faces, and eyes.

Circling Zero: Part One, We See Absence / 2002
Our daughter Nisi and son Aza happened to both be staying at our loft on Chambers Street when fundamentalist Islam struck. A friend observing the burning buildings from Brooklyn phoned to say, “Get out. It can fall on you.” But we were upstate until 9.15 when the city partially reopened to incoming traffic, so that my taping begins with our approach over the almost empty George Washington Bridge. It would be another 15 days before we were allowed to move back into our place. Our friend Lucia lent us her high-rise apartment, facing south with a dead-on view of smoking lower Manhattan. I kept taping, hours of street observations. Although I’ve given a title to this loose selection of materials it is not so much a work as sampling of the ongoing actuality. --Ken Jacobs
Traces of Absence / 1999
An experimental short exploring the absences and buried histories that follow the act of leaving home, filtered through the many routes that leaving home takes for a "Canadien" daughter of Yugoslav immigrants: cultural displacement, assimilation, mother/daughter histories, sexuality and memory. Childhood and recent Super 8 footage is intercut to create a repository for family portraits, cultural memories of the balkans, immigration history, and personal reflection.

Peace in the Absence of War / 2015

Absence of Satan / 1985
A beautiful woman screams at something unseen off camera. Paul Newman appears eating salad and soon the famous sequence of Paul Newman closing a car door cut with a helicopter takes place. Absence of Satan is probably one of George Barber's best Scratch works and is a deft reworking of cinematic narrative and cliché. George Barber is one of the pioneers of Scratch Video which emerged in the UK during the mid-1980s. Scratch video makes use of found images from films and television, cutting seemingly incongruous imagery together to make a new meaning; it has been compared to the record-scratching techniques of hip-hop music, hence the name. The Absence of Us / 1986
A tape that explores the politics of words and the significance of names. Fingers tracing letters written on walls. A hand holding a pen as it fills the pages of a diary. A woman's voice reverberating. This is a personal commentary about what it means to be a lesbian out in society.
Seeing Absence / 2020
This film explores an absence that characterizes spaces during social distancing. I wanted to emphasize the scenes impacted by social distancing in my neighborhood and to challenge the normalcy that some of these changes have taken on. I hope it’s a reminder to people about what is missing and what will continue to be missed if we aren’t careful.
