From the Archives of an Inventor /
Invention and America seem inseparable. The country has a restless image of itself as a work in progress; and the character at its core is the inventor — equal parts entrepreneur and crackpot, path-setter and outsider. Wetzel's piece is a found-footage exploration of one such character, a Midwestern inventor whose house has been transformed into a playful model of the future with mechanized armchairs and a domestic robot.
Archives of War, Vol. 4 - The Cold War / 2000
This fourth episode in a six-part series focusing on wars of the 20th century features the longest running conflict, the Cold War waged between the Communist powers and the western nations, most notably the United States. Relying on British newsreel footage as well as films produced by the U.S. government, this video doesn't provide much of a narrative, though intermittent screens of scrolling text provide explanations of the basic threads of the struggle between the superpowers. For the most part, the material is contemporaneous, showing how the world viewed such events as the Communist takeover of China, the bullying tactics of Senator Joseph McCarthy, and the beginnings of the conflict between the United States and Castro's Cuba.

Archives of War, Vol. 3 - World War II: The Battles / 2000
The third installment in a series of videos that chronicle wars of the 20th century focuses on battles of World War II, using newsreel footage, much of it shot by Britain's Pathé News, to show how the war news was relayed to the home front. This video doesn't feature an overarching narrative, but the many segments, with titles such as "Latest from the Solomons," have an immediacy that is underlined by the dramatic and at times nearly breathless narrations. Included are films shot in the North African desert showing the campaign waged against Rommel's Afrika Corps, unusual footage of a joint U.S and Chinese force training in India, film shot by Soviet cameramen illustrating the brutal end of the Nazi siege of Stalingrad, and footage of U.S. Army nurses training and wading ashore at Pacific outposts. Considerable footage of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the pre-invasion bombing raids, and the hard-fought battles across Europe, most notably the Battle of the Bulge.

This film by Kara Walker takes its title and narrative from documents in the Freedman Bureau’s archive and uses her trademark cut-paper silhouettes to animate the disturbing story of an African American family. Controlled by the sticks and strings of their human operators, including the artist herself, the figures moving within a shadow puppet-like theater space remind us of the manipulation of historical oppression and the powerlessness of the oppressed while also emphasizing the theatricality of the film itself. Themes of race, gender, sexuality, and violence intersect and unfold on Kara Walker’s multi-colored stage.

Alla caccia del microfilm si scatenano, oltre alle due bande, il detective Teddy e la sua amica Jane, inviata speciale del Times. Tutti si insidiano, si spiano, si scontrano, fino a che la banda di Joe in trasferta a Tunisi stermina quella avversaria e si ritira dopo aver distrutto il microfilm. Ovviamente il microfilm buono resta nella mani di Teddy, che lo riporta nel malsicuro archivio londinese.
