The Fire of Antifer (Materials for a Film in Progress) / 2021
In the beginning, Elisabeth picked yellow flowers. On the green hill, facing the sea, between a bunker, the glare of the sun, and the radiation from the wars in progress. In these times of confinement we film an hour a day, less than a kilometer away. It's a very old desire to film from home. The flowers, a radioactive yellow, evaporate in the light. And all around, the playful insects vibrate tirelessly. In this landscape under surveillance, there is Paul, an ancient Newfoundlander, struck down by the world to come. Has he left ? Has he disappeared? His dog prowls along the cliffs, between Fécamp and Yport. The sea turns red, we fall into the night.
Through Diligence and Progress Towards Achievement / 1929
Progress? / 1971
Sven Elfström (1927-2017) was a full-time manual labourer who started off as a welder at the shipyards in Uddevalla. Eventually he moved to the industrial city of Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm, to work at the manufacturing workshops of the state telecommunications company, Televerket. Elfström began shooting 8mm films at an amateur film club in Uddevalla. When moving to Nynäshamn he acquired a 16mm camera. Most of the eleven films that he made in this format are shot in Nynäshamn; the actors in these films were friends and family. The films were self-financed, shot and edited by himself, often on reversal film stock as this was the cheapest way to make a film. This means that usually neither negatives nor additional copies exist of these films, but merely one original print. UTVECKLING? starts with a fierce critique against capitalism, consumerism and man’s exploitation of the world.

The film shows the development of the Chinese city while highlighting the Portuguese presence: the official buildings, personalities of the colonial administration. The bust of the great poet Luis de Camões recalls the epic discoveries and the glory of navigators. The director observes the Chinese people, their activities, their hobbies. He seems fascinated and, perhaps in spite of himself, shows us a very dynamic Chinese city where the Portuguese seem to be tourists.
