Dopo un terribile incidente d’auto, l’impiegato Arthur Seligman si risveglia privo di memoria. Un’infermiera lo ha però ascoltato a lungo parlare nel sonno e ha trascritto le sue parole in un quaderno: attraverso queste tracce frammentarie, un’inconscia “scatola nera” della sua vita, il protagonista cerca di ricostruire il proprio passato, scoprendolo cupo e segnato da molti traumi irrisolti. Ancora non pienamente padrone della propria coscienza, l’uomo si trova però improvvisamente accusato d’omicidio.

Sophie a sei anni rimane tragicamente orfana, la tutela viene assegnata alla zia Annabelle, praticamente un'estranea. Le due si trasferiscono in una grande, misteriosa casa vittoriana dove Sophie dissotterra una scatola di legno chiusa con uno strano simbolo disegnato sopra. Nel disperato tentativo di connettersi con sua nipote, Annabelle apre la serratura rivelando una bellissima scatola musicale. Ogni volta che il carillon viene ferito e riprodotto, la melodia sorprendentemente agghiacciante suona leggermente più a lungo, accattivando ancora di più Sophie. Quando la scatola musicale inizia a influenzare il comportamento e la salute di Sophie, Annabelle cerca l'aiuto di uno psicologo infantile e chiaroveggente che scopre presto che il carillon è posseduto da uno spirito malvagio che cerca di perseguitare Sophie e distruggere Annabelle.

Depressed and reeling from the recent death of his wife, Tom has built up quite a gambling debt. He goes to stay with his wealthy Aunt Florence in hopes that she will write him into her will. When a nasty creditor makes it clear that Tom is out of time, he devises a plan with Elodie, the undertaker's daughter, to rob the graves of the rich townspeople buried in the cemetery across the road. After plundering the graves, Tom arrives back at Florence's house and events take a dark turn. Tom begins hearing and seeing strange things that seem to coincide with the deaths of the people he robbed. Even more disconcerting... he appears to be the only one sensing the occurrences. One question lingers: Is Tom's conscience playing a trick on him... or is he really being haunted by those he stole from?
