Without Inspiration / 2022

Oleksandr Surovtsov was born in Mariupol. Until 2016 he was a factory worker. In that year he became a member of Platform TU in Mariupol. The organization's mission is to promote human rights and freedoms through an inclusive culture and modern art and to develop critical thinking and tolerance in Ukrainian society. Platform TU became one of the few independent art spaces in Eastern Ukraine, where underground culture, innovative ideas, human rights, and freedoms are dominant values. The short film 'Without Inspiration' was made in April 2022, especially for Art Collection Telekom in western Ukraine, where the family has found a temporary shelter.

The Inspired Island: River Without Banks / 2014

River Without Banks (2014) takes poetry and war as its main theme. As homage to Death of a Stone Cell, the film is structured into ten segments; each led by the first lines of the first ten stanza of the poem. Correspondences between the poet and his friends are incorporated throughout, taking the audience back and forth between Lofu's youth and middle age, only to eventually depict a full picture of the protagonist. The camera follows Lofu on his trips back to the bomb shelter and tunnel in Kinmen and his hometown Hengyang in Hunan Province of China, while also capturing his daily life in his adopted country of Canada. Acclaimed as the "Wizard of Poetry", Lofu shares through the film of the most insightful reflections.

In the middle of uninhabited nature a stranded man Krištof (62) rescues Andrej (23) from the car, who tried to commit suicide. He takes him to the farm, where Andrej slowly comes to himself. Without words, a genuine link between them is attached, which, together with the idyllic environment, again pulls Andrej back into life.

The series Geografia da Arte analyzes the relation between artists and the places that inspire them. Two episodes will be screened. In "Ragnar Kjartansson + Iceland", one of the most important artists of contemporary art prepares a retrospective at the Reykjavík Museum of Art, exploring his connection with the country's culture. In "Henri Cartier-Bresson + India" we discover how the photographer met Mahatma Gandhi in 1948. His camera recorded the leader’s last appearance on night before his assassination. The photographs helped catapult Cartier-Bresson to international fame as a photojournalist.
