Magnificent Failure /
Harold Rubin, an artist, Jazz musician and architect, left South Africa in 1963, after being charged with blasphemy for one of his paintings. He left behind Johannesburg, where he was born, raised and worked, and moved to Tel Aviv Israel, where he still lives today. "Magnificent Failure" follows Rubin's journey back to Johannesburg 44 years after his hasty departure. In Johannesburg of the 1950's Rubin was a leading artist, with a clear political agenda against the rule of apartheid, which he expressed in his art and music. Despite the prohibition of those days, he played Jazz with top black musicians like Kippie Moeketsi, Hugh Mesakela, and Jonas Ngwangwa. The blasphemy charge, with a pending imprisonment sentence, cut short his diverse and promising career. In Tel Aviv he has continued, for the past four decades, to paint and make music, this time aiming his arrows at mainstream Israeli society, but his audience eludes him.

TWO POINTS OF FAILURE (2013) is a conceptual experimental 35mm film that frames this demise (1976-2013) and takes as its primary subject matter Godard's failed prototype for the compact 35mm camera - a camera which suffered from myopia and was simply too loud. The film as you see it was constituted by dissolving negative emulsion in a chemical solution while recording the sounds of its own making. Through an extended, repeated looking, it functions as both an index of a disappearance and the remainder of the objects, techniques and medium which is now lost.

Stunned Man (2004) is the second part of Rosefeldt’s Trilogy of Failure (2004/2005) in which three different settings draw a picture of our vain entanglement with everyday rituals. In each case the protagonist is caught up in a microcosm that suggests mental and spatial claustrophobia. As a reaction to the hopeless situation, he plunges into permanent Sisyphean activity – going nowhere and producing nothing. The motifs of perpetual attempt and constant failure find their equivalent in the repetitive structure of the loop. The scenes are allegories of our frantic and ultimately futile attempts to escape the surrounding norms, constraints, structures and rituals by which we are determined.
