Una casa desolata e isolata, nel bel mezzo di una brulla cittadina sconosciuta, dove l'unico altro edificio vicino è una vecchia stazione di benzina, fra l'altro disabitata. È quella la prigione di Ann, borghesissima donna ormai prossima al parto, che viene rapita da una coppia di psicopatici i quali, essendo sterili, trovano che l'unico modo possibile per accontentare i loro desideri di paternità e maternità sia quello di rapire una sconosciuta, facendo credere, al marito di questa, che sia perita in un incidente automobilistico. Dentro quelle mura si agiterà l'estenuante gioco della vittima e del suo carnefice. Un tiro alla corda che, nel finale, si sintetizzerà nello scontro fra Ann, decisa più che mai a difendersi e a difendere il bambino che porta in grembo, ed Helen, la deviata criminale irosa e ossessionata dalla voglia di diventare madre.
