Torpedo Explosion / 1900

An explosive bit of early war film. These two exciting snippets were potentially part of a much larger action extravaganza. Originating from Alfred West's early blockbuster (two million people had seen it screened at Regent Street - by West's own count), they may have come from a series called 'Our Navy At War'. As the catalogue boasts, "It was shown... before an audience consisting of Naval officers and men from the various ships, who spoke in the highest praise of the truthfulness and realism of the various scenes." These excerpts are perhaps from the film described thus: "There is a terrific explosion. The battle rages in detail."

Torpedo Attack on H.M.S. Dreadnought / 1907

This fragment comprises just over half of the original film and features a parade of partially-submerged submarines and destroyers launching torpedoes into netting rigged alongside the Dreadnought.

The Flying Torpedo / 1916

In the future (1921), an alliance of several foreign countries plot to attack the US. American officials, coming to the realisation that the country is basically defenceless, offer $1,000,000 to anyone who can come up with a weapon to defeat the invaders. Winthrop Clavering, a writer and inventor, hears of the reward and tells his friend Bartholomew Thompson, a scientist and inventor who has been working on developing flying torpedo. However, enemy agents have also heard about Thompson's project, and set out to kill him and steal his plans. This film is now considered lost.

Cassidy, comandante di un sommergibile di lunga crociera, riceve l'ordine di partire dalla baia di S. Francisco per ignota destinazione. Le istruzioni relative alla missione da compiere sono contenute in una busta sigillata, che il comandante, in conformità agli ordini ricevuti, apre ventiquattr'ore dopo la partenza. Direttosi verso un determinato punto, imbarca un ufficiale arrivato in aereo. Giunto in vista di Tokio, il comandante Cassidy, accodandosi col suo sommergibile ad una grossa unità giapponese, riesce a forzare gli sbarramenti e a penetrare nel porto. Vengono sbarcati alcuni uomini che compiono le osservazioni necessarie e trasmettono con una radio da campagna i dati, che renderanno possibile il primo micidiale bombardamento della città. Ripreso il largo, il sommergibile viene individuato e inseguito dal nemico, ma riesce a sottrarsi alla caccia, e dopo aver colato a picco unità nemiche ed abbattuto aerei avversari, rientra, con una sola perdita, a S. Francisco.
