Writer and filmmaker Assia Djebar explores Algerian history, the psychological impact of war, and post-colonial female identity in this 1979 classic of film literature. Named for (and taking its structure from) a traditional song with five distinct movements, the film combines documentary-style observation with loose narrative form to tell the story of Lila, an Algerian expatriate returning to her country 15 years after independence has been won. In comparing her life with the lives and experiences of rural Algeriennes, Lila is able to put her childhood demons to rest and discover a new history -- one written in the ongoing strength of generations of women. Like much of Djebar's writing, the film has a strong subtext dealing with resistance to patriarchy and women's desire to appropriate the means of power and expression -- one of which, of course, is the filmmaker's camera.

Il ventiseienne Carter Webb è uno scrittore, che dopo essere stato lasciato dalla sua fidanzata Sophie, depresso, parte per il Michigan per prendersi cura della nonna. Una volta arrivato fa conoscenza dei vicini, tra cui la casalinga Sarah e sua figlia adolescente Lucy. Con Sarah instaura un rapporto fatto di passeggiate e chiacchiere in cui si confidano a vicenda. A Sarah viene diagnosticato un cancro al seno; in seguito alla malattia riuscirà a sbloccare il rapporto, da tempo in crisi, con la figlia. I rapporti che Carter instaura con Sarah, Lucy e la nonna, riusciranno a fargli vedere la vita in modo differente, dandogli la spinta per un futuro migliore e a fargli conoscere un nuovo amore.

I miei problemi con le donne / 1983
Accanito dongiovanni, David Flower si è rivolto a una bella psicanalista per guarire dalle sue ansie, dovute ovviamente a problemi infantili. Le sedute danno il via alla complicità amorosa tra medico e paziente fino a quando la prima consiglia al secondo di cercarsi un altro psicanalista (maschio). Ma la visione di un bel paio di gambe femminili, distraendolo dall'arrivo di un'auto in corsa, condurranno ben presto Flower al capolinea. Remake pesantuccio e non molto felice di Blake Edwards del bel film di Truffaut "L'uomo che amava le donne": la malinconia dell'originale finisce annegata in un tono generale un po' troppo farsesco. Di certo non il miglior film di Edwards.

Cronenberg's speculative historical work draws inspiration from the anatomical waxworks at the La Specola museum in Florence, Italy. These wax models, traditionally used for medical demonstrations, are given a new perspective in the film. Cronenberg's work reveals the vibrant and surprising aspects of these female wax corpses, which were previously seen as static and serious. As David Cronenberg explains: “The Specola wax figures were created as a teaching tool, capable of revealing the mysteries of the human body to those who could not access … real cadavers held in universities and hospitals. In their attempt to create whole, partially dissected figures, whose body language and facial expression did not show suffering or agony … the sculptors ended up producing living characters apparently overcome by ecstasy. It was this surprising stylistic choice that captured my imagination: what if it was the dissection itself that induced that tension, that almost religious rapture?”
