The Carriers Are Waiting / 1999
Roger Closset is a man who obviously loves his family, though that doesn't always make them feel better. Dad is an obsessive type with a short fuse and a long list of curious ideas, and his wife and children must often bear the brunt of his eccentricities. Roger works as a reporter, a job he doesn't like which doesn't pay especially well, either. One day, Roger learns an area business association is sponsoring a contest for a family that can break a world record, with the grand prize being a new car. Suddenly, Roger gets a brainstorm -- if his son can open and shut a door 40,000 times in 24 hours, the car will be theirs. 15-year-old Michel, however, is not at all happy to have been drafted into this new responsibility, especially when dad builds a practice door in the backyard and finds a trainer to teach Michel how to open and close it with greatest efficiency.

Sayed is a defeated human being living in the slums of old Cairo where he is constantly bombarded with government propaganda. He crosses paths with an ancient Egyptian porter carrying a throne and wondering in search of his lost king. Now Sayed wants to be seated too 'even for 5 minutes to see how it feels'. This political allegory is a study of the inherent self-imposed oppression in third world nations.

The Bapst Brothers: Romain, Maurice and Jacques – whom we will also meet in The Gruyere Chronicle (produced in 1990) – are peasants and carriers and work with their father. The Water Carrier / 1994
"[El reino de los cielos] is about the difficulties facing the blind 70-year-old Bernabe when he regains his sight after an operation. The film is like a fable, shot in the village of Cucunuba in the Andes. Cucunuba, like the world of García Márquez and Yoknapatawpha by Faulkner, is a mythical place that becomes universal despite and thanks to its special features. Cardosa: 'The theme of blindness is directly linked to the medium of film. I expressed Bernabe's "way of looking" before and after regaining his sight in the different camera styles.' ... the first film shot in Colombia since the government stopped film production in 1988." - IFFR
