Hesanut Builds a Skyscraper / 1914
A very strange-looking piece of animation from before the triumph of the Bray model of cartooning, this 1914 cartoon, to the modern eye, looks like quarter animation (in which only about a fourth of the movements are covered) and scratchboard work. Hesanut, the star of perhaps half a dozen cartoons from this period, is a top-hatted fellow who builds a skyscraper by placing the girders in place and then using a sort of brick cannon to put up the facade.

This is Stalin's pyramid, his immortality. We visit people who have lived there for 50 years, see their flats (some modernized, others decaying), and listen to their histories: the son of a KGB man, a retired rocket scientist, a sculptor's son. an actor, seamstresses at a uniform shop, an ex-pat, and two artists. Skyscraper / 1986
The starting point of the work is the idea of making the structure of the image audible via the simultaneously exposed light tone, of generating sound and moving images using photographic processes, but without a film camera. The dramaturgical stipulations for this resulted from the photo images, taken evenly as a series of 5 from different perspectives, which resulted from different distances to the photographed object, edited and expanded with a copying technique that I have been continuously using numerous photographs since I was 16 and material collages. This collage of moving images and the experience and knowledge that I was able to derive from it became the cornerstone for my creative ideas.
