Sia Pasolini che Guareschi rispondono commentando soggettivamente documenti cinematografici e fotografici del dopoguerra, come gli episodi dell'intervento sovietico in Ungheria, l'assassinio di Lumumba, indipendenza del Tanganika, l'attacco israeliano in Egitto, l'ascesa al potere di Castro a Cuba, Ava Gardner a Roma e Sophia Loren nel Polesine, l'inoronazione della regina Elisabetta d'Inghilterr, l'elezione di Eisenhower, De Gaulle al potere, l'indipendenza dell'Algeria, la morte di Marilyb Monroe, il volo di Gagarin nell'orbita terrestre con il trionfale ritorno a terra. Pasolini fa derivare la nostra angoscia dalle azioni efferate compiute dalla società occidentale, mentre Guareschi cerca di difenderla vedendovi una speranza per il futuro.
