Sostenuto dal National Geographic Society, un gruppo di eminenti scienziati e studiosi della balena blu si imbarcano in una missione rivoluzionaria: Trovare ed identificare con dei tag alcune balene blu della California, utilizzando campioni di DNA per confermare il sesso dei singoli animali,e ricostruire la incredibile migrazione di queste splendide ed enormi creature quando si riuniscono raccolgono presso la cosiddetta "chimera" nota anche come il Duomo del Costa Rica.

Il salto della balena - L'oceano di vetro (Kujira no Chouyaku - Glassy Ocean) è un corto di Tamura Shigeru uscito nel 1998. Sopra un mare di cristallo, ghiacciato non dal freddo ma dal tempo rallentato, vivono alcuni strani personaggi. La trama, se di trama si può parlare, segue le pacate vicende e le reminescenze di un vecchio abitante di questo mondo surreale. Il tema centrale del film però non è la storia, bensì l'esplorazione visiva della sua bizzarra premessa: il tempo quasi completamente fermatosi che congela fino all'immobilità quasi totale l'ambiente marino - non vero e proprio protagonista ma buon comprimario - con cui interagiscono i personaggi. Molto piacevole anche la colonna sonora di Teshikai Utollo, evocativa e mai invadente, che contribuisce a creare l'atmosfera onirica caratteristica di questo corto. -> Kurofune
