Con l’armistizio dell’8 settembre 1943, la guerra si fece ancora più sanguinosa. Le truppe tedesche e i soldati fascisti, invece di lasciare il Golfo da sconfitti, ordinarono lo sgombro di centinaia di migliaia di abitanti dalla costa, continuando a mettere a fuoco e saccheggiare, ordinando il rastrellamento dei giovani, e la fucilazione per chi si sottraeva. Hitler ordinò che Napoli venisse ridotta in “cenere e fango”. Ma Napoli reagì, «prima metropoli europea a levarsi contro l’oppressore nazifascista con le sole forze del suo popolo», come ha scritto lo studioso Guido D’Agostino, rendendosi protagonista di una delle pagine più intense e commoventi della Resistenza. Tra il 27 e il 30 settembre 1943 in strada scesero tutti, aristocratici e operai, donne, femminielli e bambini; si persero moltissime vite, ma la vittoria arrivò, dolorosa, eroica e potente.

This movie explores the difficulties faced by a Communist Party organizer under that regime when an order goes out to kill anyone threatening the current regime. At first he is willing to leave the country, but his experience of the situation of workers moves him to stay. Despite efforts of captors to help him escape, he refuses, and dies a martyr's death.
